A Special Note to District 8

To My District 8 Family (Belview Heights, Bush Hills, Central Park, College Hills, Ensley, Ensley Highlands, Fairview, Graymont, Thomas, Rising West-Princeton, Tuxedo, Tuxedo Heights),

Firstly, I want to thank each of you for supporting District 8 and calling our community home. From Belview to Tuxedo Heights, your gifts and perspectives are as unique and diverse as each neighborhood's history and beautiful architectural design.

As you know, every four years, men and women, such as me, canvas District 8 in hopes of representing you within our city government. Campaign promises of cleaner and safer neighborhoods, economic development, and opportunity fall short. My research suggests that this may stem from a lack of our representative's limited authority.

More About Jonathan

Mr. Jonathan Lee Hatten is a servant leader, educator, clergyman, mental health advocate, and podcast creator from Birmingham, Alabama. Jonathan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Miles College, a Professional Educator Certificate from Alabama State University, and a Master of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis on psychology and counseling from the University of West Alabama. Additionally, he is pursuing a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Leadership and Counseling, having begun his studies at Andersonville Theological Seminary.

Hatten’s educational background and advanced social skills have benefitted him professionally and have positively impacted those he has engaged with, beginning with working in behavioral health as a program coordinator at Capitol Care South and now as an educator and a minister. Jonathan started his educational career as a History and Government instructor at Midfield High School before serving in his current assignment as a History, Psychology, and Government and Politics instructor at Ramsay High School. Jonathan is also the current Senior Pastor at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in North Pratt City. Before Mt. Moriah, Jonathan served as senior pastor of Spring Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in McCalla, Alabama, for several years. Jonathan is most proud of his ability to connect and aid his students and parishioners with various life challenges and obstacles within his educational and pastoral ministries.

However, Jonathan’s reach extends beyond the classroom and pulpit through the radio airwaves and various social media platforms. Hatten is a regular on-air commentator for WATV 94.9’s Abby-award-winning Vital Show, which discusses human behavioral topics and current events. Jonathan was also the co-creator of the Birmingham Let’s Talk podcast, which discusses local, state, and national politics and current events.

As a mental health advocate, Jonathan continues raising awareness surrounding mental health, providing support, and influencing policy by establishing meaningful partnerships and collaborating with various for-profit and non-profit organizations through his pastoral and educational duties to help build stronger individuals and communities.

When Jonathan is not engaged in one of his various acts of service, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Mrs. Victoria Hatten, a fellow educator at Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School, and his son, Mr. Jhase Hatten, a college student at the University of Colorado Boulder.

“When we provide opportunities, people thrive. When we ignore problems, they fester.”

Fresh Perspectives

I’m committed to bringing in fresh perspectives and using common sense to begin tackling the root causes of some of the issues we face. From crime to sustainable economic development to restoring civic pride, I believe it’s time for a new approach—one built on accountability, collaboration, and community interdependence so that together, we can continue to move District 8 forward.

  • Invest and implement Mental Health Awareness Programs for District 8 residents (adolescents and adults).

  • Organize and host Quarterly District 8 Community Clean Up Days to help combat litter's negative impact on our communities’ aesthetics, public health, environment, and crime rates.

  • Create a District 8 non-profit organization to foster community empowerment, address community needs, boost civic engagement, foster self-sufficiency, and allow District 8 to gain grant eligibility.

  • Build strategic community partnerships to pool resources, support our local businesses, build a stronger, more vibrant community, and develop innovative solutions to our various community challenges.
